The KDF 55 medium may remove over 99 percent free chlorine by electrochemically converting dissolved chlorine to water-soluble chloride ions.

Hydrogen Sulfide

The hydrogen sulfide gas is converted to insoluble sulfide, an inert, innocuous precipitant, in the KDF 85 medium, eliminating H2S.

When water contaminated with hydrogen sulfide passes through the KDF filter, the copper in the medium loses an electron, and the sulfur acquires an electron, resulting in copper sulfide and water formation. Because copper sulfide is water-insoluble, you can backwash it from the KDF filter material.

Backwashing removes precipitant accumulations from the media bed regularly.

Heavy Metals

Water-soluble cations (positively charged ions) of lead, mercury, copper, nickel, chromium, and other dissolved metals can be removed up to 98 percent using KDF 55, KDF 8s, and KDF-C medium.

When you filter soluble lead cations through KDF media, it converts to insoluble lead atoms, electroplated onto the media's surface. Other heavy metals bond to the filter and recover it when it melts down the exhausted media.
